Amy Sue Root's Story

April 20, 2010

Amy Sue is currently in brain rehab in Jacksonville, Florida.  At this time, her diagnosis is that she is not a candidate for rehab and they are planning to discharge her home on April 26, 2010.

Amy will require tons of medical equipment as she still has a trachostomy and PEG tube and of course a permanent shunt placed in her head.  My family will also require a van handicap wheel chair accessible to transport her to outpatient rehab and doctors appointments.  Unfortunately, I am not getting an extension on my family medical leave and am having to pay COBRA insurance, that I cannot afford.

It seems as through the future of my family is dependent on the kindness of family, friends, and strangers at this time.  I think our health care system is a joke ..... what happens to the middle class, working people in this country???

God Bless
Sue Root (amy's mom)

http://www.tbirecovery.org/LongTermPhase.html  This web site gives information on severe brain trauma and talks about the "brain" neuro storms ... if interested check it out!

Thank you everyone for your love and support!

Just wanted to update everyone on our last week in Orlando.  Amy Sue is currently off the ventilator and breathing on her own with a trach collar.  She is having neurological "brain storms" and has periods of increased heart rate, increased breathing, and rigid muscles.  She has been slowly getting weaned off methadone and valium.  She appears to be having some withdrawal symptoms and with the brain storms it is hard to determine which one is affecting her.  She looks much better with the road rash wounds healing up nicely and not having a ventilator in her mouth.  She is getting fed with a G-tube with Pedisure and so her weight is remaining stable so far.  She is scheduled for a CT scan of her head on Sunday. Amy is still in pediatric intensive care.  She has a few more surgeries scheduled for sometime in the next month.

The kids and I are back in Edgewater for the weekend.  Lauren and Noah are spending most of the weekend with their friends and I am just taking a much needed break!  We are so very thankful to each and everyone one of you for your prayers and kindness!  God Bless you all!  Sue

Update from Sue

This is an update from Sue from this morning:

Good Morning! Amy had an EEG (brain activity test) done last night ...results today. She has had a few negative spinal fluid tests :) so the infection appears to be clearing! She is also starting to breath some on her own with just the trach collar (CPAP) at night time but it is definitely an improvement. They are starting to wean her off her pain medication very slowly over next month.

At this time we are planning on being in Orlando for approximately one month (could vary) we are staying at the Ronald McDonald House which is fantastic!

Thank you ALL!

I just wanted to thank each and everyone of you for all the love, caring, and support my family has received over the past month.  I can hardly believe that on FEB 24th it will be one month since the accident.   I am still very emotional and have moments that I just cant talk much, so forgive me!  AMY SUE will be 9 years old on March 1st....She was born at Halifax not far from where she is now!  She is allowed to have balloons and stuffed animals and cards but flowers remain at the nurses desk due to her intensive care status.  My children and I will be struggling more than ever during the spring birthdays of my kids.  We are still so very hopeful and have FAITH in GOD!  Amy Still has some infections and will remain in intensive care until those are gone. Wish List

We have gotten several emails asking what does Amy Sue's family need? Her Mom and siblings are going to have to move to less expensive housing. A place to live that is inexpensive would be great but finding that is tough, so we are trying to outfit a place that needs some work for them. We need, flooring of any kind, kitchen cabinets, countertops and a stove. Labor to help get it in order is always welcome!

Fundraising Meeting

Friends of Amy Sue and her family are having a fund raising committee meeting this Thursday at Denny's in New Smyrna at 6:30 pm to discuss ways to help. Thank you all for your love & support!

Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A

Update-February 17

Amy had two surgeries yesterday and so far she is doing okay! She has an infection in her spinal fluid and it will be 4-6 weeks before her next surgery can take place. She will most likely be in the ICU for at least 4 more weeks. Please continue to pray for her and her family.
